Safety

Safety is not about numbers - it's about people. While we have one of the best records in the industry, our goal is an injury free workplace where everyone, employees, contractors and visitors alike, go home safe and healthy each and every day.

Kennecott's approach to health, safety and the environment begins with an effort to engineer hazards out of our operations. In all cases we develop controls and create procedures to minimize the hazards encountered in an industrial work place. We spend a significant amount of time training our employees and contractors to stay safe and healthy on the job site, skills that can take home to their families.

Kennecott ensures everyone at our operations wear proper clothing and personal protective equipment (PPE) to protect them from hazards that may come in contact with them while on site.

Our goal is to achieve and maintain a zero incident workplace. We encourage all employees to not only ensure their own safety but the safety of those around them. This means each employee has a duty to address unhealthy, unsafe, or environmentally damaging acts and behaviors that can lead to incident or injury.

Examples of how Kennecott keeps health and safety at the forefront of everyone’s mind include:

  • Interactions - An employee initiates a conversation about a task being performed by another employee or contractor. Desired behaviors are recognized and unsafe behaviors are corrected. The initiating employee gets a commitment from the observed employee/contractor to improve at least one safety aspect of their work.
  • Shares - Each meeting at Kennecott begins with a conversation about safety. A share is anything related to safe/unsafe behavior observed by an employee.
  • Pre-task Hazard Assessment - At Kennecott we use a system called T.R.A.C.K to ensure all work is being performed safely. This system was developed to assist employees and contractors when performing pre-task risk assessments.
