International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is a global organization that develops international standards common to all member nations. The 14001 standard provides organizations with the elements to establish an effective Environmental Management System (EMS). The first ISO 14001 standard was created in 1996 to develop a standard for providing a benchmark for continuous environmental improvement. ISO has since come out with ISO 14001:2004 which is focused on clarification of the first edition. Key elements used as a foundation for an EMS are:
- Environmental Policy
- Planning
- Implementation and Operation
- Independent Auditing and Corrective Action
- Management Review
Continual improvement is stressed as a way to enhance an EMS in order to achieve improvements in overall environmental performance consistent with the environmental policy.
ISO 14001 certification for environmental management systems is a rigorous process in which the company must demonstrate conformity to the standard. Certification can be granted through an independent third-party audit organization based on the assessment of compliance with the standard. Once ISO 14001 certification is gained surveillance audits are conducted by the third-party auditor on an annual basis to ensure continued compliance to the standard.
